Last year marked 20 years…

 

Rusty's Bling!

… since I joined the Royal Australian Navy in July – 1991. I was jogged into remembering it whilst sitting in the Karratha Airport with an artist who was only just recovering from my dragging him all over the Shire of Roebourne, looking for local artists to harass.

We were ready to come home, unwinding and enjoying a beer in the ‘beer garden’ at the airport, when we decided to reconnect to our ‘real’ world and began checking our emails (as you do). That’s when I logged into Facebook and that’s where a few of my ex-recruit classmates were suddenly coming to terms with the big 2 0!

I looked up in complete disbelief. Impossible! It was only… 20 bloody years ago! So I turned to the artist with me and said:

“Chris – would you believe that 20 years ago to the day, I joined the Navy mate?”

He responded well; giving me some good-natured blokey-type-ribbing and – when I then asked him what he was doing 20 years ago, he replied:

“Ron. I was 5 mate!”

To which – we just both cracked up laughing! Up until that moment – in my mind -it had only been a little while ago, since the uniform had come off. Reality had me looking on it with fresh eyes and realising how far I’d come in all that time.

The irony of course lay in the fact that it was Facebook that gave me my reality shot!

Go figure! 😉 So in having a good laugh and entering into the spirit of things – go back and have a giggle on me: Time for a little light humour…
